I’m Stephanie Kane. I started Life in Law for one simple reason: Law without life is non-sustainable.
How did I come to this conclusion? Lawyers identify so deeply with their work that they lose touch with life. As their focus narrows, stress increases and performance plummets. Work becomes a trap.
My purpose in launching Life in Law is to equip lawyers to put life back into their practice so they can be better lawyers and happier people.
I accomplish this mission by coaching you to manage your energy and time, to maximize performance by identifying and playing to your strengths, and to use storytelling to gain greater understanding of your clients and become a more powerful and insightful communicator.
How Can I Help You?
First, a bit about myself. I’ve been a partner in a major law firm, successfully defended the CEO in the collapse of one of the nation’s largest savings & loans, and operated a solo practice. I’ve practiced banking law, civil litigation and criminal defense.
Before law school I earned a second degree black belt and opened my own karate studio. Karate trained me to focus and motivate talented athletes to win. The goal of sports psychology is stretching yourself to the point where performance barriers evaporate. Those lessons apply equally to law and are a key component of Life in Law.
I’ve published four novels, three starring a dyslexic criminal defense lawyer. Writing award-winning books showed me how to engage the reader. Because persuasion is so fundamental to advocacy and all aspects of client service, narrative technique is a cornerstone of the Life in Law program.
I’ve also taught learning-disabled adults to read. That taught me that understanding strengths and learning styles is key to maximizing individual performance. Life in Law coaches lawyers to identify their own learning styles and play to their strengths so they can be more effective in everything they do.
I’m a graduate of the foundational program of the Institute for Life Coach Training, an accredited coaching institute, and a member of the International Coach Federation. Coach training has given me the tools and framework to motivate, guide and support lawyers in developing the self-awareness that will make them more productive and engaged in all aspects of life. That is the goal of Life in Law.
What Can You Expect from Working with Me?
What you do outside of law makes you a better lawyer.
My unique approach to putting life back into law requires you to take a hard look at what you value and want. It entails aligning your values with your goals so your success has meaning. It supports you in embracing the risks necessary for growth and change, and the new practices that will make your success a foundation for achieving an even greater potential.
I know the sacrifices lawyers make for their profession, the straightjacket work can become, and the guts it takes to reach for something more. The guidance, feedback and one-on-one support of a trained coach who has walked in your shoes can make the difference between failure and success. It can even make you a more effective lawyer who delivers better service to clients.
My goal in working with you is that you will no longer feel forced to choose between life and law. You will neither sacrifice your life to work, nor drop out of our profession. By putting life back into law, we make the legal profession a better place.
