For Individual Lawyers

Corporate America is waking up to the fact that the 80-hour work week is unsustainable.  The cost is a vacuum in leadership and an exodus of talent.  Flexibility and the recognition of human needs produces not just better lives, but better service to clients. (Fortune Magazine, December 2005:  “Get a Life!”)

Can you afford to wait for the legal profession to catch up?

For lawyers who have given up life for work, the good news is you can have both.  The more fulfilled you are in your personal life, the more meaning you will find in your work and the better lawyer you will be.  The first step is to take control of your work so it doesn’t control you.

Life in Law is a three-month program to re-energize your practice and catapult yourself to new levels of performance in and outside of law.  It covers practice management, balancing your career with life outside the office, and leveraging creativity to produce greater value for clients:

  • Month 1:  Self-management and performance
  • Month 2:  Balance
  • Month 3:  Strategic thinking and creativity

By the end of the program, you’ll be better equipped to balance life with work so you can get to the top of your game and stay there.

For Associates

The disconnect between firms and associates is at an all-time high.  The midlevel years are make-or-break time, with technology erasing the line between work and a personal life and associates no longer betting on partnership.  Is it any wonder that work-life balance is becoming more important than making partner?

Turnover has an even greater impact on client service and the bottom line.

Ten percent of associates leave in their first year, 43% within three years, 66% within five years and 75% by their seventh year.  The primary return on a firm’s investment occurs in years five to ten.

Associates vote with their feet.  And they’re most likely to leave just when they become profitable to their firms.

The hidden costs of lost skills, contacts and knowledge capital are damaging to a firm’s culture, morale and client relationships.  Clients value continuity of service.  Turnover is disruptive and costs them their investment in valued associates.

Life in Law for Associates picks up where mentoring leaves off and provides associates with the balance on which career growth and satisfaction are based.  The three-month program covers self-management, narrative skills and the foundations for rainmaking and leadership:

  • Month 1: Time and energy management
  • Month 2:  Balance and narrative technique
  • Month 3:  Leadership and rainmaking

By the end of the program associates will be more productive, have greater job satisfaction and be better equipped to mentor themselves.
